Searching Luna County Civil Dockets
For basic information on a District or Magistrate civil case, New Mexico Case Lookup is free. It needs no registration. Type in an exact case number first if you have it. A party-name search also works, but check the court, the case type, the filing date, and the case style before trusting a match. Remember that this public search is only an index, not a place to pull document copies.
Registered users with eligible accounts get a fuller Luna County layer through re:SearchNM. Access is limited by account type and case security. For inspection, a specific filing, an order, or a certified copy, the Luna County District Court Clerk and the Luna County Magistrate Court Clerk are the local channels. When no easier route works, a Luna County IPRA request can seek an existing record. It must name the right court and describe the Luna County record with reasonable particularity. Municipal courts in Luna County hear no civil cases at all.
- Identify the Luna County court from the filed papers, case number, amount, and case type.
- Use Case Lookup with the exact number or a party name.
- Confirm the case style, filing date, court location, and status in the returned civil docket.
- Read the register for filings, service, motions, hearings, orders, and post-judgment events.
- Request the exact document or certified copy from the clerk when the public index does not provide it.
Luna County Civil Court Split
Civil work in the county splits between two courts. New Mexico District Court, Sixth Judicial District, Luna County carries the general-jurisdiction load. That load covers contract, tort, real-property, estate, domestic-relations, mental-health, juvenile, and other categories the New Mexico judiciary lists. Luna County Magistrate Court handles a narrower slice. Its limited jurisdiction covers tort, contract, and real-property matters up to $10,000. Check the amount and the case type before sending a Luna County civil docket request to either clerk. That detail decides where the case belongs.
| Court | Civil docket scope | Custodian path |
|---|---|---|
| District Court | General civil, domestic relations, estate, real-property, tort, and other listed categories | Luna County District Court Clerk |
| Magistrate Court | Civil, tort, contract, and real-property matters within the $10,000 limit | Luna County Magistrate Court Clerk |
| Municipal Court | No civil cases under the official municipal court description | Not a civil docket route |
The Sixth Judicial District fee page distinguishes District and Magistrate fee schedules.
Luna County filing fees are not ordinary copy fees, and one should never stand in for the other. Follow the Luna County clerk’s current copy procedure for copies.
Inside a Luna County Civil Docket
A Luna County civil docket, also called the register of actions, is a chronological log. Every event lands in order. You may see the case number and style, the category, the filing date, the court location, the judicial officer, party rows, attorney information, filings, hearings, and financial entries when a court ledger exists. One caution matters here. A docket event can show up even when the linked document is not public, not digitized, or protected by a security setting, so the entry itself is not proof you can read the paper behind it.
| Case identity | Case number, case style, type or category, filing date, status, court location, and judicial officer. |
|---|---|
| Party rows | Plaintiff and defendant or petitioner and respondent, plus attorney names and CAIDs where shown. |
| Filing events | Complaint, petition, answer, service event, motion, response, notice, proposed order, or clerk acceptance event. |
| Settings and orders | Hearing date, time, judge, location, orders, judgment, settlement, dismissal, default, stipulation, or arbitration entry when present. |
| Documents and relations | PDF, searchable PDF, TIF, security indicator, related case, and appellate link where available. |
Local records also carry a court identifier. The number D-619-CR-2026-00001 is a District criminal example only. Copy a civil case number straight from the actual Luna County civil record instead of inferring it from that pattern.
Luna County Civil Docket Categories
How broad can a Luna County civil docket search get? Sixth District’s FY2020 civil reporting shows the range: civil appeals, contract or debt and money due, real estate, child support, custody and visitation, dissolution, domestic violence, parentage, probate estates, juvenile abuse or neglect and adoption, protected probate, mental health, tort, water cases, name changes, and miscellaneous civil matters. Those figures are district-wide across Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna Counties, though, not Luna County-only totals. For official materials sorted by civil, criminal, probate, and self-help categories, the Sixth District forms library is the place. The court maintains it for that purpose.
Form categories describe the court’s topic areas, nothing more. The case type and the court shown in a particular Luna County register still control the search path.
Civil Case Types on the Docket
Event patterns differ by category. A Luna County contract case may show pleadings, service, motions, and judgment. A domestic case can carry sensitive material under distinct access limits. Contested estate matters belong in District Court. Probate Court handles informal probate and uncontested estates with its limited jurisdiction. The categories documented in the court structure and statistical materials set the map for a Luna County court docket search. But that is not a promise every case type is publicly displayed.
- Contract, debt, and money-due disputes.
- Tort and real-property matters.
- Domestic-relations matters, including dissolution, custody, visitation, child support, and parentage.
- Estate and probate-related matters, with contested estate work in District Court.
- Name-change, civil-appeal, water, mental-health, and other district categories.
Note: Municipal courts handle city or village ordinance and lower-level criminal matters, not Luna County civil cases.
Luna County Civil Documents and Registers
A Luna County case lookup, a docket register, a plain copy, a certified copy, and a transcript are not the same product. Case Lookup gives you the basics: index, status, and events. The register lists what happened in order. A document copy reproduces one filing, order, judgment, or exhibit. A certified copy carries the clerk's seal. A transcript comes through the reporter or transcript process rather than the Luna County copy counter.
Before you request a Luna County civil record, gather a few details. Have the court, the case number, and the case style if you know it. Add the document or date range you want and your preferred format. The IPRA form asks for contact details, court location, responsible court or department, the person whose records are sought, record type, case number, and a description. You do not have to explain your reason. The clerk, though, will not build a new report or chase an open-ended research question for you.
Fees are posted by court. District copies run $0.35 per page, and Magistrate copies run $0.50 per page. District certification costs $1.50 each. Municipal fees, transcript costs, archive charges, postage, and electronic delivery vary. Confirm those with the clerk before you pay.
Civil Docket Settings and Hearings
A Luna County civil setting is a court event on the calendar, nothing more. It is not automatically the trial or the outcome. The official re:SearchNM setting example shows the basics. You can see hearing type, start date, start time, judge, location, result, hearing comment, reschedule reason, and cancel reason. The result field records what happened at that one hearing. It does not settle the whole civil case. Reschedule and cancel reasons may simply be blank.
For a hearing coming up soon in Luna County District or Magistrate court, check the relevant Sixth Judicial District hearing schedule. Then confirm any date that matters with the clerk or with the notice or order served in the case. Those public calendars cover the current day plus six future days. One caution: a civil docket can list a register event with no matching calendar row. A calendar row also does not promise that Case Lookup will show the underlying document.
Luna County Civil Filing Context
The FY2020 Sixth District civil table offers regional context for Luna County civil docket research. It counted 1,524 cases pending when the fiscal year opened, 1,736 new cases, 553 reopened cases, 2,527 closed cases, and 1,272 pending at the end. Those totals combine Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna Counties. Treat them as a regional picture, not a Luna County-only workload or a current count.
The published table includes reopened and administrative categories. Quote the figures exactly as reported rather than converting them into a clearance rate the table never claims.
Civil Docket Access Rules
New Mexico's access rules open Luna County court records to the public. The exception is when a judge seals them or another protection applies. That openness has limits, though. It does not mean every document in a Luna County civil case is yours to read. Domestic cases often hold sensitive financial, medical, child, and address information. Guardianship and conservatorship matters carry automatic sealing in the situations Rule 1-079.1 covers. What the public actually sees in Luna County depends on the rule, the case category, and the security tier. Redaction and digitization matter too.
New Mexico access rules:
NMSA 14-2-8 IPRA procedure describes a written-request route for specifically identified existing records.
Rule 1-079 NMRA addresses public court records, sealing, and protected identifiers.
Rule 1-079.1 NMRA addresses sealing protections for covered guardianship and conservatorship records.
Never republish full addresses, dates of birth, driver-license numbers, financial-account details, medical facts, juvenile identities, or protected victim information. If a Luna County result will not load, say it is "not publicly displayed." That phrasing beats claiming no record exists.
Luna County Civil Docket Boundaries
Not every Luna County civil matter belongs to the state courts. Bankruptcy, for instance, is federal. Those files never show up as New Mexico state civil dockets. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico lists MCVCIS as a free phone index. It covers records filed on or after July 1, 1991, with five searches per call in English or Spanish. That is a separate federal channel for a Luna County bankruptcy search. It is not a stand-in for the District or Magistrate civil record itself. The Bankruptcy Court's MCVCIS instructions lay out the free phone-search option and its date coverage.
